A laryngoscopic examination by an otolaryngologist (Ear Nose Throat specialist) should preceed referral to a speech & language therapist for disorders of the voice. This procedure will identify or rule out the presence of vocal fold pathology.

Voice therapy involves teaching good vocal hygiene, eliminating vocal abuses, and direct voice treatment to alter pitch, loudness, or breath support for good voicing. Stress reduction techniques and relaxation exercises are often taught in tandem.
